7 ways to get your resolutions to stick

It’s about now that your New Years Resolutions might start to look a bit jaded.  The “too hard” basket looks tempting, you’re losing sight of your enthusiasm, struggling with your conscience.

Sound familiar?  Does this feel like a re-run of last year? And the year before.... ?

Don’t give up.    Sure, it’s no longer the 1st of January, but that doesn’t mean you can’t restore your resolutions and still make them work.  It’s not too late.  Be it personal resolutions or business resolutions, here are some tips to help them stick:

1. Make sure you’ve got a specific, measurable goal

You can’t just say “I want to exercise more”.  What does “exercise more” mean?  I want to run 10 kms 3 times a week?  I’m going to take up yoga? Be specific.

2. Create a “by when”

If it’s going to be a goal instead of just a dream, you’ve got to say what you’re gong to do by when.  “I’m going to lose 5 kgs by the end of the month”.

3. Make sure you can control it

You can’t control what other people do, you can only control what you do.  So you can’t say “I’m going to have a happier marriage”.  But you can say “I’m going to be a happier husband/wife”.  You can only control what you’re bringing to the table - the marriage may or may not improve.  In the same manner you can’t make your staff happier, but you can control what you, the employer, do.

4. Break it down

Break your goal down into a series of more achievable goals.  Instead of focusing on losing 20 kg, focus on losing that first 5kg, then the next 5kg.  Break it down into small bites so you can “win” along the way.  Looking to increase your revenue by $100,000 this year?  Break it down into quarters, or months, or even weeks (eg. I’m going to bank $50,000 this month)

5. Don’t beat yourself up

Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you reach your goal.  You might take a few backward steps, but keep your goal in sight.  If it takes a bit longer to reach it that’s OK.  The important thing is to keep moving towards your goal.

6. Get a support structure

Find yourself a buddy who shares your resolution and motivate eachother.  If your resolution is business-related, get yourself someone who’s not only a “buddy” but someone who has the know-how to help.

7. Set yourself up for success

It’s pretty hard to attain your goals by willpower alone – impossible probably!  So set your world up for it.  People who are fit and healthy have a lifestyle that supports that.  People who are overweight have a lifestyle that supports that.  If you want to increase your business turnover this year, have a structure that supports that
